C.1860 Louis XVI Revival French Marquise Chair (Wide Bergere), Second Empire
One of a kind, now sold
A finely carved French marquise (wide bergère) from the Second Empire period (c.1860), reflecting the Louis XVI revival style that reimagined the neoclassical elegance of the late 18th century (circa 1760–1790).
Its oval back, scrolling arms, and finely detailed carving capture the refinement of the period, featuring stylised ribbon work, acanthus leaves, and egg-and-dart borders punctuated with rosaces above five elegantly tall, fluted legs.
Retaining traces of its original gesso patina, softly aged to reveal the warm wood tones beneath, the piece is a graceful testament to the quiet beauty of handmade pieces that last the test of time. Recently upholstered in natural, organic fabric with traditional upholsterer’s nails.
