A beautifully proportioned early 20th-century bureau, richly decorated in the English chinoiserie taste with gilt and polychrome scenes against a deep black-japanned ground.
The fall front presents an atmospheric landscape populated by elegantly dressed figures, a traditional pavilion, flowering trees and exotic birds. Further chinoiserie vignettes extend across the three graduated drawers, depicting figures, river scenes, architecture, flowers and cranes. Fine gilt linework frames the individual compositions, while six decorative drop handles complete the façade.
The fall front opens to reveal a fitted interior and an inset leather writing surface with an attractively worn, time-softened patina. An ingenious pair of automatic lopers extends as the bureau is opened, supporting the writing surface without requiring manual adjustment—a refined and practical feature of its cabinetmaking.
The bureau stands on graceful cabriole legs terminating in boldly modelled gilt claw-and-ball feet. Its compact proportions make it ideal for use as an occasional writing desk while retaining the decorative presence of a statement piece.
With its lustrous black ground, warm gilding and jewel-like flashes of colour, this bureau would make a sophisticated addition to a drawing room, study, bedroom or entrance hall.
The bureau is accompanied by a working key, which operates the locks to the fall front and drawers.
