Rare registered Liberty & Co. design with original maker’s plaque

An exceptionally rare and architecturally striking Arts & Crafts oak dressing table by Liberty & Co., London, retaining both its original Liberty & Co. Ltd., London W. ivorine maker’s plaque and Registered Design No. 232372 stamp.

Constructed in solid quarter-sawn oak, the dressing table exemplifies Liberty’s progressive furniture of the late nineteenth century, combining restrained geometry with subtle Gothic Revival influences. The design is distinguished by dramatic A-frame side supports, a pierced trefoil gallery beneath the mirror and original wrought-iron triangular drop handles.

This example bears Registered Design No. 232372, identical to the documented Liberty dressing table preserved in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (Object O16956). The museum records describe the model as part of a Liberty bedroom suite and note its relationship to the commercial interpretation of contemporary Arts & Crafts design influenced by C.F.A. Voysey, with Gothic Revival references expressed through the pierced arches.

Unlike many surviving Liberty pieces, this dressing table retains both its maker’s label and registered design stamp, providing an excellent chain of authenticity.

The mirror glass has been replaced during its lifetime, while the oak mirror frame, pivot mechanism, principal structure and original iron furniture remain intact. Such replacement of the mirror plate is not uncommon in period dressing tables and does not detract from the rarity or historical importance of the piece.

Examples of this specific registered design are exceptionally difficult to acquire and appear only very rarely on the open market.
