A family business
More than thirty years later, La Maison remains a family business. Our son is now part of the company, alongside a small team of craftspeople and specialists, many of whom we have worked with for years. We remain closely involved in what we source, what we design and what we make — working directly with our clients and overseeing each piece from beginning to end.
A shared love of beautiful things
La Maison began with a shared love of antiques. Guillaume grew up surrounded by the furniture and decorative traditions of his native France; Louise came to them with a designer's eye and a fascination with the craftsmanship of historic interiors. Together, they began seeking out pieces they loved — initially for themselves, before turning that shared passion into La Maison London in 1994.
Learning how they were made
Working with antiques soon became a deeper exploration of how they had been made.
Restoration was part of La Maison from the beginning, giving us the opportunity to work closely with skilled craftsmen and understand the traditional techniques behind the pieces we loved.
It taught us to look beyond decoration to proportion, construction, carving and finish — and to understand the craftsmanship that gives a beautiful piece its character.
Antiques for contemporary living
As our knowledge grew, so did what we could offer.
We began adapting antiques for contemporary living — extending beds for modern mattress sizes, adjusting proportions for particular interiors and making considered changes while preserving the integrity of the original piece.
From there came a natural question from our clients: Could you make one?
Keeping the craft alive
We would only do so if we could create pieces with the quality and authenticity we admired in the originals.
That meant applying everything we had learned — from proportion and construction to hand carving, traditional finishes and the subtleties that give a piece its character.
Over time, our Collection was born: individually made to order and customisable for each client and interior. Bespoke followed naturally, allowing us to create entirely individual pieces from an antique, photograph, drawing or simply an idea.
More than thirty years later, what drives La Maison is much the same as what began it: a love of beautifully made furniture, an appreciation of what the human eye and hand bring to an object, and the belief that exceptional craftsmanship is worth preserving.
